A lockout is a small job. A programmed key fob is worth several times as much, the customer's only other option is the dealership, and far fewer shops compete for it. If you have the equipment, this is the keyword to own.
Most locksmith websites bury car keys in a bullet list on the home page. That is a lot of money left on the table.
Why this keyword is different
Somebody searching "car key replacement near me" is not comparing you to another locksmith. They are comparing you to the dealer, who quoted them a big number and a three-day wait.
You are the cheaper, faster option. That is a much easier sale than competing on a lockout, where the customer just taps whoever is at the top.
It also filters out price shoppers. Nobody replaces a key fob for fun.
Give it a real page
Not a bullet point. A full page, targeting car key replacement in your city, with:
- A price range and an honest explanation of what changes it
- The makes and years you can handle
- How long it takes on site
- What you need from them — proof of ownership, ID, the VIN
- A comparison to the dealer, on time and cost
- Photos of your actual equipment
That last one matters more than you would think. Programming gear in a photo says you can really do this, which is the customer's main worry.
Put a number on it
The instinct is to hide pricing so you can quote on the phone. It costs you calls.
Locksmith customers have been burned — quoted $29 and charged $350. The shop that publishes "most transponder keys run $180 to $260 depending on the make" reads as honest, and honest wins the call.
Give a range and explain what moves it. You are not committing to a price, you are removing the fear.
Then split it up
Once the main page is working, add pages for the specific jobs people search:
- Transponder key programming
- Key fob replacement
- Push-to-start / smart key
- Broken key extraction
- Spare key cutting
- The three or four makes you get called about most
Do not build fifty thin pages for fifty car makes. Build the handful you actually service, properly. Thin pages do not rank and they drag the rest of the site down.
Set your Google profile up for it
Add car key replacement as a service on your Business Profile, with its own description. Add photos of key cutting and programming. Post about a job you did this week.
Then ask those customers for reviews specifically — a review that says "replaced my Honda key in 40 minutes for half what the dealer wanted" is worth more for this keyword than any link.
Ads work well here too
Car key searches convert hard and the ticket covers the click cost easily. If you are running paid ads, this is where to point them — at the car key page, never the home page.
