Bing Places for Locksmiths, and Why Apple Maps Is Harder

Bing Places names locksmiths, by name, as a business that can hide its address. Apple Maps asks you to drag a pin onto the right building and its front door. Both listings are free. One fits a van locksmith with no shop. The other fits a locksmith with a storefront, and it's a lot more work for everyone else.

Every figure below links to where it came from. This post is for the owner who set up Google years ago and never touched the other two maps.

What counts.

Who Bing Shows for Locksmith in Los Angeles

On October 28, 2026 we pulled Bing's top 10 web results for "locksmith" in Los Angeles through DataForSEO. No map block came back in that pull. So these are the plain blue links under it.

What it wasSpots on page one
Directory and lead sites5
Key kiosk and key copy brands3
A national franchise1
A shop whose phone numbers are in Vancouver, Canada1
A locksmith based in Los Angeles0

That's our own pull, one city, one day. It still says a lot. Not one Los Angeles shop had a web spot. One of the ten answers a Los Angeles search with a Canadian phone number.

You won't beat a directory for that blue link this year. You can get into the map listing, which pulls from Bing Places. That's the door a local shop actually fits through.

Why Bother With Bing at All

Bing feeds more than bing.com. Microsoft says the new Bing Places is meant for deeper ties to Bing Maps and Copilot. That's from its October 3, 2025 launch post. Bing Places is how you control what Microsoft's maps say about you. Skip it and Bing builds your listing from whatever it finds on the web.

What Bing's Rules Say About Locksmiths

Bing's help pages are short and plain. Four rules matter most to a locksmith.

You Can Hide Your Address

The businesses without a physical store page names locksmiths, plumbers and tutors as businesses that bring services to the customer. In the listing editor, find the question that asks if customers are expected to visit your address. Then pick the whole address or just the zip code and city.

The address doesn't go away. The Bing Places FAQ says it stays on file for verification. You can't use a PO Box. You can add up to 20 service areas.

No Cheap in the Name

The data quality guidelines ban words like best and cheap in a business name, unless they're legally part of it. Breaking the rules can lead to suspension. "Cheap Locksmith Downtown" won't fly unless that's on your papers.

Your Number, Your Site, Your Address

The same page says don't use a reseller's or partner's phone number. Don't use their website either. A mailing address where you don't work can't go on the listing. That rules out the call center number some lead sellers push on shops.

Hours That Match the Truck

You get up to two time slots a day, or a 24/7 box. If you only run nights on call, set it that way. A listing that says open when nobody answers costs you a review.

Import From Google or Build It by Hand

Most locksmiths should start with the Google import. It's faster. But it comes with strings.

Import from GoogleBuild by hand
VerificationAutomatic if your Google profile is verifiedPostcard PIN, or phone, text or email when offered
Time to go live7 to 12 days after importUp to 12 business days for the card, then 7 to 12 days
EditingEdit in Google, then sync to BingEdit in Bing
CategoriesMay not carry overYou pick them
DuplicatesCan create them if Bing already has youClaim the old listing first

All of that comes from Bing's Google sync page and its FAQ. Sync runs weekly, every two weeks or monthly. You can't pick which Google listings come over. Bing takes every one it finds.

When to Skip the Import

Skip it if your Google profile is in trouble. A suspended or half verified profile won't hand Bing a clean copy. Skip it if your Google account holds old listings you don't want on Bing. And skip it if you want Bing to show a different tracking number. A linked listing can't be edited in Bing at all. Our guide to tracking where your locksmith calls come from covers that setup.

Claim Before You Create

Search Bing Maps for your name and address first. Bing often has you already, built from the web. The FAQ says to click the three dots on the listing and pick Manage business. Claiming that way can open phone, text or email checks instead of a postcard.

If Bing marks your new listing as a duplicate, you lose the edit panel. Claim the live one instead. If you moved, don't edit the old listing to the new address. Bing wants a new listing and the old one marked closed.

Apple Maps Wants a Building

Apple Business Connect is now part of Apple Business, at business.apple.com. The map listing is one tool in a bigger kit. It's built around a place.

Apple's add a location steps ask you to enter the address, then drag the map marker onto the right building. Satellite view helps you see the entrance. A phone number is required for a new location. The page says nothing about hiding an address or setting a service area.

Then Apple checks your company. Its verification page asks for two of four proofs. A D-U-N-S Number or EIN, a DNS record on your domain, App Store Connect, or official papers. Papers can be a business license, a lease or a utility bill. Apple gives you 60 days. Review takes up to five business days. Miss the window and Apple deletes the account.

Who Apple Fits

A locksmith with a counter and a key machine fits fine. Put the pin on the door. Add photos of the shop. If you're already on Apple Maps, the guide says a phone check may be offered, with a four digit code.

A locksmith who works from a van has a harder road. Apple's steps assume a spot customers can walk to. Don't put a pin on your house to get in. And never on a mail drop. Bing already bans a mailing address where you don't work, and the same logic holds on Apple.

The Two Proofs Most Locksmiths Already Have

An EIN and your domain. If your site is on your own domain, the DNS record is a short job for whoever runs it. If your state licenses locksmiths, that license is your paper backup. Our list of which states license locksmiths shows if yours does.

What Moves You Up on Bing

Bing tells you how it ranks. Its ranking page names three things. Relevance, distance and popularity.

That third point is the one locksmiths miss. Google keeps its own reviews. Bing leans on Yelp. A shop with 300 Google reviews and an unclaimed Yelp page looks small on Bing. Our post on getting more locksmith reviews covers how to ask. Send some of those asks to Yelp.

Bing's main help page says it checks your details against search engines, websites and social media. So match your name, address and phone everywhere. The same rule runs Google Maps, which we cover in ranking a locksmith in Google Maps.

Don't Touch It While It Publishes

The FAQ says frequent edits while a listing processes can delay it. Make your changes in one sitting. Then leave it alone for the full 7 to 12 days.

If you'd rather have us set up all three maps, we take one locksmith per zip code.

Common Worries

Can a mobile locksmith list on Bing Places without a shop?

Yes. Bing's help pages name locksmiths as a business that brings its service to the customer. You still give a real address for verification. Then you set the listing to show only your city and zip code, and add up to 20 service areas.

Is Bing Places free for locksmiths?

Yes. Bing's help pages call Bing Places for Business a free Bing service. Be wary of anyone who charges a fee just to file it for you. It takes one sign in and a Google import.

How long does Bing Places take to show my listing?

Bing says 7 to 12 calendar days after verification. A postcard PIN usually comes in 5 to 6 days and can take up to 12 business days. A Google import skips the postcard if your Google profile is already verified.

Should I import my Google profile into Bing?

If your Google profile is verified and clean, yes. It's the fastest path. Skip it if Google has you suspended, if your account holds listings you don't want copied, or if you want to edit Bing on its own. A linked listing can only be changed in Google.

Can I put my locksmith business on Apple Maps without a storefront?

Apple's location steps are built around a pin on a building, and they don't cover hiding an address. A van only locksmith has a harder time there than on Bing. Never use a mail drop or a fake address to get a pin. Get Bing right first, and add Apple if you open a counter.
